Let’s face it;
we all have to be reminded to engage the best business practices when making
every business decision. Do you think it comes naturally? Well; why do we spend
time developing and coveting business process cheat sheets, and spend money for
consultants to come in and identify what the current process is, and then, what
steps should the business take to ensure that it is the most efficient and
profitable process?
My point. So,
let’s shake off the façade and go back to basics.
How often does
your business or team evaluate its business model? It’s a good rule to visit it
at least once a quarter. This way you will stay focused on making sure your
business is on track for business development and growth. Playing the “business
catch up” game is no fun and it causes market loss and low team morale.
As a
communications major, we were taught to ask ourselves these 6 questions when
writing an article; Who? What? Where? When? Why? and How? Yes, simple. What I
have found is that asking and answering these same simple questions in your
business scenarios develops a great foundational model for your data analysis
and reports presentations.
Let’s do an
analysis on a “business target market” or “niche market”. Since I am a great
fan of small-business’s, let’s apply the “who, what, where, when, why and how”,
question process to define a niche market for a Lawn & Property Maintenance
business. We can then use the model to develop a Microsoft Power BI data
analysis and reports presentation.
Homeowners
between the ages of 40 and 75 who are busy, and retirees.
What
services do they or would they want? Let’s say:
Homeowners
and retirees who are interested in year-round yard maintenance to include snow
& ice removal and small in-home repairs.
Where?
Choose a specific area, city or town. Let’s choose:
Topeka,
Kansas’s surrounding counties: Shawnee County, Jackson County, Jefferson County,
Osage County, Wabaunsee County
When?
Let’s restate:
Homeowners
and retirees who are interested in “year-round” maintenance.
Why?
Let’s restate:
Homeowners
are busy, and retirees want to spend time enjoying life.
How?
What is an estimate of your current customers annual income? Or, based on your pricing
analysis, your potential customers will have an income of let’s say:
Homeowners
and retirees with an annual income of $50,000 plus.
So now that we have outlined the answers
to our favorite 6 business questions, let’s focus even further to channel in on
this business niche. Here we go again... 😊:
Who
are the people in Topeka, Kansas’s surrounding counties? Or, who are your
current customers? Let's say:
Niche
1) Homeowners ages 40-75 who are busy.
Niche
2) Retirees.
You
can have more than one niche market. Remember; niche markets are developed by
identifying needs or wants that are not offered by competitors in order to market
to a small but lucrative sector of the population. Niche marketing identifies a
population segment that is likely to buy a particular product or use a
particular service.
What
are their common characteristics and interests? Let's say:
Both
niche markets want to spend their time doing other things.
Both
niche markets care about the “care” of their homes.
Both
niche markets have annual income of $50,000 plus.
Why do
customers or would people choose your business to provide this service? Let's say:
Your
business services are a convenience.
Your
business is dependable.
Your
business charges a fair price.
Your
business payment options are easy.
Develop
this table:
What
are the features of each service your business provides? What are the benefits
of the features? For Example:
Here are more things to think about. Try
building your own business analysis. For example:
Target Market Evaluation -Ensure that there are enough target
people/options that fit all the business criteria. If there aren’t enough then
re-evaluate your target market. Try answering these questions on your own:
"Ann is a Sr. Consultant for ASBNC Training & Consulting who has over 20 years of helping organizations improve performance and operating support through training and business process improvement."
Training is a very rewarding profession and I enjoy it. Most sessions end well with students equipped, charged and ready
to use their new found skill. I’ve noticed that for the most part, continuing
education students have learning expectations that are quite simple and address
two questions. How does it work? And; how can I use it? And of course there are
the exceptions.
Business people and decision makers have
a tough job. Not only do they have to keep the wheels turning with sales and
performance, they have to look down the road and see what business
opportunities are ahead. Business documentation processing certainly has
evolved from the typewriter and simple word-processor days from when I was in “college”,
(yep). And I would argue that one major requirement for business success is for
leadership to have the ability to know what automated options are available, and to
have the resources to make it happen.
That’s where I come in. With over 20
years of the ever evolving knowledge of automation, I have definitely had to
keep up with the times. While there are standard favorite applications for
business processing, there are also new kids on the block as well. The paradigm
shifts from data to Big Data, and from robotics to AI (Artificial Intelligence)
says it all. My training sessions include teaching today’s relevance and the
foresight of making it happen in the business future.
While most of my students attend
training sessions to improve their immediate performance, there are some that
attend to “sharpen the saw” and “think tank” their future business processes. Both
reason’s are valid. What I do believe however, is that the student who is there
to learn and analyze their future business processes are really setting themselves
up for success.
Everything can’t be learned in an 8 (eight)
hour classroom setting. Plan and hire a consultant. Use the classroom to
prepare your business SME (subject matter expert). That way, you can hit the
ground running with a good idea of what you want the consultant to develop.
This will save the business time and money because the SME can provide educated
direction and a sound draft of preliminary requirements.

I had a wonderful opportunity to attend the best women's conference by far; the 2 day 6th annual 2019 IronDresses conference. The conference is presented by the women at the Divine Unity Community Church also lovingly known as DUCC in Harrisonburg Virginia where Pastor Chris & Lady Cherelle Johnson lead the charge! The year's theme was "Well Women; Building Her Temple".
I'm certainly not one to run to every conference. Like you, I'm much too busy for that. But after already missing several invitations to come, I decided to take the time off and hop the plane and make my way there. With an unreal schedule and feeling kind'a uptight about the whole idea, I was reminded by Sister Buffy to "have fun" :-). So, taking her advice I put it in my mind to just do that.
Getting there wasn't easy, and of course the obstacles starting showing up. After running O'hare airport in Chicago to catch my connecting flight, I knew that there was going to be something said there that would rejuvenate me, and that there was something that the enemy didn't want me to discover. To the point; 1) Have fun. 2) Go with anticipation that there is going to be something special just for you.
It was the evening of day 1, and I was not disappointed. The conference kicked off with a formal (it may have been announced as semi-formal, but you know yo' girl!) buffet banquet. Everything was on point. It was lovely. The women at the registration confirmation table were a breath of fresh air. Every hostess was sweet and lovely. For real! No attitudes anywhere to be found. Chapter 2 of Lady Cherelle Johnson's book "Iron Dresses, Strength in Femininity", (of which we were given a copy as part of the registration package), is simply titled "Be Lovely". I think every worker in the conference read that chapter of the book. 3) Choose to be sweet and lovely.
The young women held it down, took charge and walked in what they were definitely gifted and blessed to do. I had to thank them for having the courage and for sharing their gifts. This conference reminded me of who our creator is and how He has gifted us by His Grace to be who He created us to be...women.
